Through numerous productions, Abhiranga Theatre has gained local and international recognition. Since 2016, it has supported the Colombo International Theatre Festival and has also participated in India’s BBITF. Its motto is: “Find your own world within the world.”

About the play

Since childhood, a young woman has found solace in books. Her life changes when she meets a mature and profound thinker whose philosophical ideas guide her towards writing a book that captures their shared intellectual universe. Just as the manuscript nears completion, he disappears without a trace. Although the book is finished, she fears releasing it because she feels that its ideas belong to him as much as to her. She experiences the unfinished responsibility as a fatherless pregnancy and begins a desperate search for a co-owner before giving birth to the work in front of a judging society.

Director’s note

No matter how deeply we attempt to create something original, creative work is inevitably shaped by the influence of others. Through us, others may project their ideas into society and, once their intentions are fulfilled, we may be left to face the consequences alone. When society accepts the outcome, recognition does not always belong to us; when it rejects the work, the burden may become ours alone. Unknown Writer explores this condition through the isolation of an artist whose identity is shaped by external contexts, a loneliness compared in the production to the suffering of a young woman condemned by society for bearing a fatherless child.
