About the group

Selene Theatre Group was established by Tharindu Wanigasooriya with an alternative approach to theatre-making. A banker by profession, he brought together colleagues who shared a strong interest in theatre and the performing arts. The group reached the final round of the Sri Lankan State Drama Festival 2023 with its production Lapati Muwa Mas. At present, Selene Theatre Group works through the collaboration of young theatre professionals and professional bankers who are actively engaged with theatre and drama.

About the play

Giri Devi – Section 364A follows a young woman brought before the court on a charge of incest, although she was in fact drugged and abused by her elder brother. The story changes direction when Giri Devi, a well-known figure from Sri Lankan folklore, appears on stage, revealing how similar patterns of violence and injustice recur through history. Giri Devi questions the social use of prophecy to determine a person’s future and asks whether certain tragedies might have been avoided if such beliefs had not shaped people’s decisions.

Director’s note

Giri Devi – Section 364A combines the essence of Sri Lankan folklore with dance, music and contemporary social issues related to the judicial system. Traditional beliefs have often been used in ways that discriminate against women, but the production also asks whether similar biases can continue within systems of law enforcement and justice. By bringing folklore and a contemporary legal situation together, the play invites the audience to examine how inherited beliefs, gender discrimination and institutional processes intersect.
