About the play

Based on a true story and inspired by the catastrophic floods and landslides of Cyclone Ditwah, The Dark Memory follows a man who once lived peacefully with his wife on a mountain, farming beside their home. Relentless rain triggers a devastating landslide, and the land they nurtured together buries his wife, his only family. Left alone, he curses the rain. Water, which he knew as something that extinguishes fire, instead ignites within him an unquenchable fire of grief, rage and loneliness. The play reflects on how a single tragedy can become a profound catastrophe within the human soul.

Director’s note

In bringing this story to life, every creative decision was made with intention and care. Professionally recorded music has been selected to deepen the emotional journey of the audience, while the cast and crew were chosen for their theatre experience. Lighting plays a central role in reflecting the mood, emotion and atmosphere of each moment on stage. Every prop, however small, is placed with attention to the emotional depth of the story. The production aims to offer a strong visual and emotional experience while remaining faithful to the human loss at its centre.
