About the group

Ashokenagar Nattyamukh was founded on 1 September 1999 by Avi Chakraborty, Sangita Sarkar, Angshuman Sarkar and Samiran Dey. After working with invited directors until 2004, the group developed a distinct theatrical identity through productions written and later directed by Avi Chakraborty, beginning with Operation 2010 (2005). The group has produced numerous plays, organised the Khola Haoa Theatre Festival, published Nattyamukh Nattyapatra and Amal Alo Journal, and regularly conducted theatre workshops. In 2020 it established its own performance space, Amal Alo, which has hosted more than 200 productions.

About the play

Hriday Bhangaar Gaan is a solo performance inspired by Palestinian experiences of war and displacement. After a warning signal announces that her home will be bombed within minutes, a middle-aged mother struggles to decide what she can save. As time runs out, memories of her missing child, dead children, shattered dreams and the brutality of war overwhelm her. Through fear, grief and urgency, she reflects on loss, survival and the responsibility of remembering those whose stories are erased by violence. By the end, her grief extends beyond one Palestinian mother to become the sorrowful cry of mothers affected by war across the world.

Director’s note

Hriday Bhangaar Gaan, inspired by Khawla Ibraheem’s A Knock on the Roof, is not merely the story of one distressed mother; it echoes the grief of mothers across a world torn apart by war. Homes are destroyed, people are displaced and families are forced into exile. The play focuses on the terrifying moment when a mother learns that her home will be demolished within minutes. Can she leave behind the memories, love and emotions attached to it? Through Puja Kundu’s performance, the production moves through war-ravaged landscapes and gives voice to countless mothers standing alone amid devastation.
