About the group

Teatr Maska was established in 1995 in Jelenia Góra, Poland, as a small private theatre. Over three decades it has created around thirty productions for adults, teenagers and children, with performances presented internationally in the USA, Canada, Germany, Greece, Russia, Albania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Armenia, Egypt, Tunisia and Sri Lanka. KONTRABASISTA has received international recognition, including Best International Show at United Solo, New York (2016), awards in Albania, Russia and Greece, and Best Performance and Best Actor at a monodrama festival in Tunisia (2024).

About the play

KONTRABASISTA tells the story of a musician occupying the lowest level of the orchestral hierarchy: the double bassist. The action takes place in the room of an unsuccessful, isolated man whose life is dominated by an instrument he experiences as both burden and destiny. The double bass becomes the centre of the stage action, silently accompanying and seemingly commenting on his professional, social and personal failures, disappointments and unfulfilled desires. His narration, interrupted by musical digressions, develops as a confession and an attempt to give shape and meaning to his own biography.

Director’s note

When an actor stands alone before an audience, even when he can hide from time to time behind a great instrument, he must build every mood and emotion without the support of acting partners. KONTRABASISTA is a word-based monodrama, so the actor’s direct personal communication with the audience is essential. The protagonist is a withdrawn man who spends his days alone in a room, in the shadow of a huge double bass that he blames for the failures of his life: his lack of artistic recognition, intimacy and fulfilment. He speaks to us from a loneliness that even music cannot fill.
